Delhi, resorting to brute tactics, similar to those used during the post December 16 2012 Nirbhaya agitation, over 500 students were water cannoned and brutally lathi charged on the afternoon of January 18. EVen as MHRD Minister Smriti Irani's Shastri Bhavan office was cordoned off like a war zone. Temperatures ran at 12 degrees when the police's brute behaviour severely injured democratically protesting students.(January 18, 2016). Rohith Vemula's tragic suicide was the trigger for the protests.

In Hyderabad, anger and grief at Rohith Vemula's tragic suicide on Sunday, January 17, 2016 has led to a complete shut down of the University today, January 19. The two member team appointed by the MHRD is awaited.  Students are determined not to allow classes until the Vice Chancellor Appa Rao resigns. The police tried to prevent a procession and gathering at  Rohith's cremation yesterday.  A 1200 strong students rally and protest echoed the simmering anger of students of the University of Hyderabad.

Vishakhapatnam and Mumbai also saw spontaneous and large protests.

There is every likelihood that these will spiral across the country.
