The riots in Surat after the demolition of the Babri Masjid had really shaken the nation. It was manifestation of hatred and violence towards helpless people belonging to the minority community. It was. therefore, highly necessary to thoroughly investigate violence that erupted in December, l992 and Janualy, 1993. The Institute of lslamic Studies and the Centre for study of society and Secularism, therefore, decided to carry out investigations. Mr. lrfan Engineer who frequented Surat was approached and he showed willingness to carry out investigation. We are quite thankful to him for having done the job on behalf of these institutions.
