- If the happenings in Meerut, UP in May 1987 were a tragedy, the aftermath was worse.
- Immediately after the massacre, two senior police officials VB Nayyar and DM Radhe Sham Kaushik were trasneferred, Commandant, PAC, ED Tripathi suspended. Between 1987-1989, they were all promoted.
- Tripathi rose to become DIG Police, Nayyar, Deputy Commissioner, Excise and Kaushik MD, UP State Textile Corporation. Worse Kaushik was given an award for his contribution to 'communal harmony in UP.'
- Loss of Legitimacy of democratic institutions that allow an all pervaisive culture of impunity drive more and more Muslims into the fold of communal forces.
