It’s been a year since Prof. M.M.Kalburgi was brutally murdered for his liberal views, in Dharwad. Now, while Dr. Dabholkar (Pune) and Dr. Pansare (both killed for the same reason) have some organisational support, Prof. Kalburgi’s memory stands alone. Hence, the need for all liberal, progressive Indians to come together as a mark of solidarity and an affirmation that such acts will not be forgotten. Unless we show that we are ready to stand firm as secular, liberal, progressive Indians, the space for our voices will shrink so badly that finally all such voices will be silenced.
Dr. Ganesh Devy, the extraordinary linguist and cultural commentator, who has shifted base to Dharwad in solidarity, has organised this event.
Venue: Dharwad
Date: August 30
Time: 8.30 AM onwards
The Nature of the Event:
There will be a silent walk, culminating in a public meeting. About 2000 persons expected in the silent walk and about 500 to 600 for the public meeting. (Mainly writers, intellectuals, social and cultural activists.)
The walk will commence at 8.30 AM from Dr. Kalburgi's residence and will conclude at the Art Gallery, about 2 kms away.
The Public Meeting will commence by 11.00 and will continue till about 3 PM.
There will be a Press Meet at 4 PM.
Would you like to come? I will be driving down with some friends. Dharwad is about 550 km from Bombay; all told, 10 hours.
Nearest airports are Belgaum, Hubli, Goa.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Warmly
Anjum
PS. Should IMSD send a statement with me to be read out at the public meeting?
